Simeon the Proud

(1340 – 1353)

Kalita’s eldest son, Simeon Ioannovich, was of a strong character, strictly commanded by specific princes. For imperious treatment he received the nickname “Proud.”

The beginning of the Trinity Lavra belongs to his reign.

With the brothers, he concluded a special agreement, according to which they all had to act in concert. The younger should esteem the elder as a father, have common friends and enemies with him. In this letter Simeon Proud was called the Grand Duke of All Russia.

The Golden Horde was friendly with him, as was his father.

Simeon died childless from the cold weather (analogous to the plague epidemic, cholera).

Ioann II the Mild (1353 – 1359)
